French rape victim Gisele Pelicot back in court for appeal trial ‘ordeal’ • FRANCE 24 English

Each day Jazelle Pelico arrived at this courthouse in regional France last year, the crowds grew. She had already stunned the country and soon the world. The rape survivor who chose to wave her anonymity had a defiant message that shame must change sides. By the end of the trial, she walked out a global icon. Pelico, whose husband recruited dozens of strangers online to sexually assault and rape her while drugged, returns to court Monday for an appeal trial triggered by one man trying to overturn his conviction. 51 men, including her former husband, were found guilty. Husamein Dwan, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison, has appealed it. His lawyer says Doan rejects the label rapist and claims he was misled into thinking Pelico had consented when her then husband lured him to the couple’s home in 2019. He’s coming into this trial scared because of the first trial. It was tumultuous outside the hearing, but he’s also in a situation where his true adversary is not Jazelle Pelico, whom he deeply respects, but the man who was her husband, whom he considers a cynical man who trapped her. Pelico’s supporters have already been gathering outside the courthouse where she is expected to speak Wednesday. We’re here to denounce rape culture, to denounce all sexual and sexist violence against women, and to denounce the appropriation of women’s bodies by men and this patriarchal logic. They say little has changed for women in France since the verdict that made Pelico a symbol of hope and resilience.

Less than a year after the landmark verdict in a drugging and rape trial that shook France last year and turned Gisèle Pelicot into a global icon, an appeals court is set to hear the case of a man challenging his conviction. Story by Charlotte Lam.

  1. Hard to believe that the people of that town had no ideea about the crimes made against this women. All those 50 men had families and friends and they know exactly about this nefarious act. So, make the list bigger cuz more people from that town are involved

  2. No way they didn't brag and gossip about the Pelicots and they went online voluntarily. If the judge allows this appeal, all the others will follow suit. Please do the right thing this time.
