A large-scale wave of arrests of citizens linked to the activities of the Belarusian Gayun channel has unfolded in Belarus.

According to the Viasna human rights center, at least 88 people have been arrested, but human rights activists do not rule out that the actual number of detainees may be significantly higher.

The largest number of cases are recorded in the Gomel region, although searches and arrests are carried out throughout the country.

Human rights activists note that since the beginning of September alone, 68 individuals have been added to the official “List of Extremists,” convicted of so-called “assistance to extremism.” This represents more than a third of all new names added to the list in the past month. According to Viasna, some of these individuals are involved in the Gayun case, but their names remain unknown to human rights activists.

Hearings continue almost daily, with defendants receiving sentences ranging from “chemical treatment with referral” to prison terms. Some cases, initially heard in Minsk, are now being transferred to regional courts.

It was also previously reported that the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Belarus . The reason for this was instances of Estonians being detained or interrogated by Belarusian security forces both at the border and within the country.

Let us also recall that Minsk recently again attempted to justify the presence of Russian weapons on its territory .
