Anyone know what the deal was with the wee (ex) house at B&Q in Newtownabbey?

  1. Tesco CEO set it on fire so they could finally extend the car park

  2. I’m not 100% sure as I’m not a professional. But I would say the smoke is because of the presence of a fire

Obviously there is others who are more knowledgeable than me but that would be my best guess

  3. It needed watering so it could grow from being a wee detached house to a large detached house.

  4. I’m both disappointed and impressed that the only answers so far are piss takes, with no further explanation as to what actually happened.

  5. It looks like there’s some sort of pyrophoric material around the top interior space of the house shown. Those noisy intermittent sparks and embers..

Either that or some sort of electrical arcing..

Possibly Bitumen felt, roofing nails, or tiles that have reached such a heated state they’ve started to pop .. creating bright bursts around the roof line?

  6. Used to pass through there when I was a teenager going to tbe Valley. Before Tesco etc were there there was a Petworld and a street of about 15/20 houses were the old church road used to be.

There was a petworld and a B&Q-type store (forget the name, stop me if you know this one). Think a Kart Valley as well but no clue where that was. Anyway, that house was an immovable object that the wee woman gave the two fingers to anyone who tried to take it away from her.

  7. My granda used to work security for Tescos / B&Q for decades untill retiring recently in his 80th year.

But anyway! He told me a wee old lady lived there and refused to sell when they constructed the shopping site. So she remained there indefinitely with her house basically in the middle of a car park

  8. My barber lives nearby to there, from what I remember he told me that it was two older women that lived in the house and no matter what was offered they never took it and stayed put. I go to that Tesco beside it quite often and if I remember right the windows and doors had been grilled up (no pun intended) a while back, presumably they had passed away or went into a home.

I admire their ‘This is my home and it’s not for sale – fuck off’ attitude towards the developers and it was always a nice memoir of someone that stood their ground on principle and didn’t let money corrupt their beliefs.

  9. The rumor i heard was that 2 sisters lived beside each other. One sister refused to sell for ages until they were paying mega bucks, then she moved in with her sister next door and they split the cash

  10. It l99ks like some sort of electrical fire. Paint over it.

  11. It was two sisters, I met them once through work. They felt they were being intimidated to sell up but never did. I think the house has been vacant for a while now though, but don’t know if it is still in their ownership. If it is, the fire is mighty suspicious

  12. Anyone ever go to the Abbey Social Club to the right of it? Looks like it’s closer now, but looked dodgy as fuck when it was open

  13. Two wee rats had been scooped the first time it was set alight. It is true about the sisters, got offered a house and cash and still refused. Whole road layout had to be changed. They still own it afaik so the value of the land is really the kicker.

  14. An electrical fire.

Was the house abandoned or something?

I’m thinking maybe someone was “growing their own” and rigged the electric themselves.

  15. I lived in one of the houses next to them before landlord sold to Tesco for demolition and evicted us. Hope they are okay.

  16. Drove past it today about 4.30pm and there was smoke coming out of the chimney. Think the place had been boarded up so I assumed it was squatters just lighting the actual fire in the fireplace.
