Zlatko Dalić
Croatia’s long-serving head coach Zlatko Dalić is expected to continue at the helm of the national team beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, according to an exclusive report from Sportske novosti.
Although Dalić’s current contract with the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) runs until the end of the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, discussions are reportedly under way between HNS president Marijan Kustić and the coach regarding an extension that would see him lead Croatia into Euro 2028.
The final decision will rest entirely with Dalić himself, but so far, he has given no indication that he plans to step down.
He has already rejected financially very big offers, some are known about, some are not even publicly known, the last one that was written about was from Qatar last year, the daily said.
All signs point to Dalić remaining in charge regardless of Croatia’s result at the 2026 World Cup.
Dalić recently celebrated his 100th match in charge of the national team, marking eight years at the helm.
During his tenure, Croatia have enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their football history, collecting three major medals – two at World Cups and one in the UEFA Nations League.
Despite a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, Dalić stated afterwards that he still has the energy and motivation to continue and guide Croatia back to their winning ways.
Before the World Cup, Dalić’s focus will be on preparing the team through qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Montenegro, as well as several friendly fixtures in 2026.
Following the tournament, a period of transition is expected, as Croatia currently boast one of the oldest squads in Europe.
Several senior players could retire from international football, with the future of captain Luka Modrić likely to be a key talking point.
Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
If Dalić remains in charge, the next major goal will be Euro 2028, which will be hosted in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Croatia will be aiming for an improved showing after recent disappointments at the Euros – exiting in the Round of 16 in 2021 and at the group stage in 2024.
