Trump confirms he has authorized CIA covert operations in Venezuela

1. Submission statement: Trump authorized the CIA to begin active operations against cartels and the Venezuelan government. The US has long seen south america as it’s playground and has long worked to exert influence in the region. Venezuela has long been a foe of the united states, activly courting russia and China to stabilize a clearly failing system. The us accuses Venezuelan president maduro of smuggling narcotics into the us and running a drug cartel and Venezuela has mobilized millions for an anticipated war. Trump has warned about the potential of ground strikes.

2. If this were really about drugs, they’d do it quietly. The fact that it’s public tells you it’s about reminding everyone who runs the “backyard”.

3. Any reason for the CIA to do anything is a reason they wouldn’t talk about being there operating openly. I know it’s Trump so who knows, but I’d imagine they are sending a specific message.

   To who and what that is, I don’t know.

4. It’s not very covert if you announce it.

5. Our history of regime trade is atrocious, and that’s partly because we’re more preoccupied with kicking particular leaders out than we are putting particular leaders in. This means that we don’t anticipate or care about what comes next. Which, in the case of Venezuela, is more likely to be a military junta of chavistas in the style of Maduro than it is any sort of rightwing Machado government, based on how closely aligned the military is with the Maduro government.

   And even if it somehow ended up being a Machado government it would still be one that was installed by a foreign government. And a TRUMP-led foreign government at that. And when has Trump ever done a favor without demanding that it be repaid many time over?

   Also, think about what happens if it actually works. Will Trump then stop with regime changes, or will he continue? Cuba next, as Trump pivots toward shoring up this hemisphere in his vision and Rubio fulfills his ultimate ambition? Then Colombia? Brazil? Yes, those last two sound insane, but quite everything is insane these days and we already seem remarkably blasé about somehow wandering blind into another regime change.

   The Trump folks are giving every indication that they’re going for this. If they do, are there really any good scenarios?

7. So in other words, he just signed the death warrant for any American or suspected American sympathizer in Venezuela because they will execute anyone they suspect as being with the CIA.

8. It’s not a Trump issue. It’s about oil. You don’t need a Trump to start Iraq War. U.S. doing U.S. things.
