Thousands Of Cars In Iceland Still At Risk From Faulty Airbags

Nearly 6,000 cars in Iceland still have faulty airbags despite being recalled, reports RÚV.

Thousands of car owners have not responded to the recall issued by the Icelandic Housing and Construction Authority concerning a serious airbag defect, according to a press release from the authority’s Product Watch.

Car owners are urged to contact dealerships immediately, where the airbags will be replaced free of charge. The defective airbags were manufactured by Takata.

The recall, one of the largest in history, was issued worldwide several years ago after 35 deaths were linked to airbags that could eject shards into occupants’ faces when deployed.

A total of 100 million airbags were recalled globally, including around 37,000 cars in Iceland. Product Watch reiterated the recall in August, yet nearly 6,000 cars have still not been serviced.

The recall affects various car models produced between 1998 and 2019, from the following manufacturers: Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Citroën, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daimler, Dodge/Ram, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Subaru, and Toyota.
