Border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan leave dozens dead • FRANCE 24 English

Smoke still hangs over the Afghan border town of Spin Baldick. Looking on Afghan refugees at the Charan border waiting by the roadside with these trucks carrying their belongings. They’re trying to leave Pakistan but have been turned away. The situation here is very bad. People are in trouble. They have their children and women with them without food or drinking water. Afghan troops opened fire on Pakistani soldiers in overnight border operations, a response to what it calls repeated violations in its territory. Earlier this week, Afghanistan’s Taliban government accused Pakistan of bombing its capital Kabul and a market in the east. Attacks Islamabad has not claimed responsibility for this particular group fuels conflicts along the hypothetical line, violates Afghanistan’s airspace, and bombards public places. It should be clear to everyone that Afghanistan has the right to defend its territorial and aerial sovereignty and will not leave any aggression unanswered. Pakistan says it responded with gun and artillery fire. Its foreign minister insisting its army is acting with restraint. Our defensive response is not targeted towards peaceloving Afghan civilian population. Unlike Taliban forces, we are exercising extreme caution in our defensive responses to avoid loss of civilian lives. Islamabad has long accused the Afghan Taliban government of permitting the Pakistan Taliban, also known as the TTP, to operate from their land and conduct crossber attacks, something Afghanistan’s authorities deny.

Afghanistan and Pakistan said on Sunday they killed dozens of each other’s troops during a night of heavy border clashes between the two countries. Afghanistan’s Taliban forces launched attacks on Pakistani troops along their shared border late on Saturday, in what it called “retaliation for air strikes carried out by the Pakistani army on Kabul” on Thursday.
