US President Donald Trump on Friday once again claimed credit for solving eight global conflicts, including the flare-up between India and Pakistan, while expressing confidence that he could end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which he dubbed his ânumber nine.â
Speaking during a working lunch with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, Trump recounted what he described as his personal success in preventing wars around the world.
âI solved eight wars,â Trump said. âGo to Rwanda and the Congo, talk about India and Pakistan. Look at all of the wars that we solved.â
Trump cited praise from Pakistanâs leadership to back his claim.
âThe Prime Minister of Pakistan said I saved millions of lives. Look at Pakistan and India as an example. That would have been a bad one â two nuclear nations,â he said.
The US presidentâs remarks referred to the May escalation between India and Pakistan that followed Indiaâs Operation Sindoor, precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
Trump, who often highlights his unconventional diplomatic approach, used the moment to contrast his record with past U.S. presidents.
âTo the best of my knowledge, weâve never had a president who solved one war. Not one. Bush started a war A lot of them did. But I saved tens of millions of lives,â he said.
He added that his efforts had been guided not by recognition but by results.
âEvery time I solved one, they said, âIf you solve the next one, youâll get the Nobel Prize.â I didnât get a Nobel Prize. Somebody got it â a very nice woman, I donât know who she is. But I donât care. I just care about saving lives.â
Turning to the current Russia-Ukraine war, Trump said he was confident of âsuccessâ in ending it soon.
âThis will be number nine. We are going to have success with this (Ukraine) war,â he said, adding, âThatâs an easy one for me to solve if I have to solve it.â
He also alluded to recent tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, calling it âan easy oneâ to handle if necessary.
âIn the meantime, I have to run the USA, but I love solving wars,â he said. âYou know why? I like stopping people from being killed. And Iâve saved millions and millions of lives.â
Trumpâs meeting with Zelenskyy came a day after his hour-long call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said both leaders had made âgreat progressâ and confirmed plans to meet in Budapest, Hungary, within weeks.
âPresident Putin and I will meet in Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this inglorious war to an end,â Trump wrote on Truth Social.
