  6. It’s the focus on specifically whether the idea of races was forged on the backdrop 19th century eugenic ideas that somehow races were pre-determined to have certain characteristics and behaviours.

    Which I think is a fair analysis.

    This doesn’t take away from the incredible fantasy that is presented in the story, but if anything, to engage with how such stories can come about and how even works of fiction are influenced by the context of their time.

  8. Lotr was about nature being destroyed by creeping industrialisation, plus many other things.

    It is the essence of NW European culture, as Tolkien intended. As a result there is an unnecessary attempt to criticism it.

  9. As the Article points out, the course doesn’t demonise Tolkien or Lewis or other authors that explored British identity. Instead it looks at their literary work in their historical context of the 1930s/1940s at a time when British identity had both national and imperial flavours that were undergoing significant change. Ultimately the course doesn’t appear to be considering questions much different than the kinds of questions people ask when they consider if the One Ring was a metaphor for the Nuclear Bomb or if the ‘Scouring of the Shire’ is a parallelism for Industrialisation.
