The Swiss police detained 42-year-old Latvian Aleksandrs Vabiks after he attacked a Ukrainian-speaking family on a train from Interlaken to Spiez on October 13. The victims reported that the conflict arose due to the Ukrainian language, as a result of which Vabiks insulted and threatened the family, and also physically attacked them.
Social media users recognized Vabiks, who had previously been accused of threatening other Ukrainian families in Switzerland.
The police of the canton of Bern confirmed the detention of the Latvian, who is not a citizen of Switzerland, and is investigating the incident.
Vabiks is known for aggressive behavior towards Ukrainian-speaking people, as well as publications featuring Russian symbols and a matryoshka tattoo. Dudnik called on the Swiss police and government to take measures to prevent similar attacks on Ukrainians in the country. Unfortunately, a recent incident occurred in Wroclaw involving a Ukrainian who became a victim of mob justice by teenagers.
