AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) — Republican candidates for Maine governor faced off on Saturday in a one-time forum hosted by state committee members.

The event focused on core GOP issues and values for the eight candidates taking part.

They discussed topics including the economy, education, and public safety.

Party chair Jim Deyermond moderated the forum, with questions coming directly from grassroots members.

Recently announced candidate Jonathan Bush said Maine’s leadership needs to change.

“We are in a terrible mess, gosh. We are on the top of every list you don’t want to be on and on the bottom of the list you want to top… First education, from number one down to 39, infrastructure at 49, thank God for Alaska. It goes on and on, and it’s because of a leadership culture that is toxic,” Bush said.

Maine’s next governor will be elected in November of 2026.
