Trump says US can’t ‘deplete’ own Tomahawk stocks, casts doubt on Ukraine aid after Putin call

You don’t have the cards right now. From berating the president of Ukraine in the Oval Office to rolling out the red carpet for Vladimir Putin in Alaska. So far, Donald Trump’s attempts at diplomacy have yet to yield results when it comes to the war in Ukraine. But after a two-hour phone call with Putin on Thursday, Trump is betting that will change. We think we’re going to get we hope we’re going to get it stopped. I thought this would be because of my relationship with President Putin, I thought this would be very quick and uh it’s turned out to be who would think I did Middle East before I did this. During the phone call, the Kremlin said that Putin warned Trump against sending US-made Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, something Zalinsky is expected to ask for when he meets with Trump at the White House on Friday. Earlier this week, Trump hinted he might agree, but after his conversation with Putin, he appeared to walk back the threat. You know, we need tomahawks for the United States of America, too. We have uh a lot of them, but we need them. I mean, we uh we can’t deplete for our country. Ukrainian forces believe the Tomahawks could be a gamecher in their battle against Russia. The cruise missiles have a range of 1,600 kilometers and cost about $2.5 million a piece. I think the Tomahawks are quite a serious weapon, and I believe they could fundamentally change the course of the war for the better. Experts say the tomahawk missiles may prove to be an effective bargaining chip to bring Putin to the negotiating table. President Donald Trump cast doubt Thursday on giving Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv a day before he meets with Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky, saying the United States could not “deplete” its own stock. Trump also told reporters that he had also talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a call about the prospect of providing Ukraine with Tomahawks and he “didn’t like the idea.” FRANCE 24’s Monte Francis reports.

  2. If Trump had any real military acumen he would tell Putin he can't, and send them without Putin believing it's possible so his defenses are down when the missiles start coming in.

    It would take less missiles to get the job done since less would be shot down by air defense.

    What a weak military leader.

  14. Trump is such a waffle, period. Arming Ukraine with Tomahawks likely won't change the course of the war, but would up the capability for deterence Ukraine needs. One call from Putin, though … stroking his ego … sets up tomorrow's meeting with Zelensky as another possible ambush … I hope Zelensky is prepared.

Trump doesn't know how to handle a person he doesn't like without allowing others to know particularly when he knows that those surrounding him don't have the same mind even if they don't express it. This is his dilemma with Ukraine vis-a-vis his favoured Putin. He prefers to vaccilate at every turn of events watching out for a moment to claim glory for peace- making at any opportunity by continuing to be in the picture but wishing his friend triumphs or his enemy fails.

  22. Tomahawks are Overkill. The only need a missile that can go about 750 km to hit Moscow in St Petersburg. Tom Hanks range is about 2500 km

  28. The US has a more important role in world peace than to meddle in small regional conflict. Ukraine has its own Flamingos or Germany’s Taurus missiles. European should stand up to defend its continent.
