King Charles should abdicate if he goes ahead with plans to pray with Pope Leo XIV during a church service in Rome, a reverend and son of Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) founder Ian Paisley has said.
Reverend Kyle Paisley said the King would not be "true to his oath", in which he vowed to uphold the Protestant faith, if he joined the Pope in prayer at the event in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.
The King would become the first reigning English monarch to pray publicly with a pope since Henry VIII.
The service, on 22 and 23 October, will bring together members from both the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England, of which the King is supreme governor.
Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback programme on Wednesday, Mr Paisley said the King should "uphold the protestant faith" and in praying with the Pope he is "breaking his oath" and "not upholding his promise to defend a reformed faith when he mixes in that kind of way".
When asked if he thinks the King should abdicate if he goes ahead with the visit, he replied: "Yes, because I don't think he is being true to his oath."
"The Protestant faith historically and theologically is a world apart from Catholicism," added Mr Paisley.
"I don't for the life of me see how he can engage in that kind of corporate worship.
"It gives the impression that it's not essentially different," he added.
The visit will be seen as an important symbol of reconciliation, in a trip that will also see the first meeting between the King and the new US-born Pope Leo XIV.
The King and Queen will meet the Pope and senior Vatican officials and there will be a special ecumenical service, bringing together Catholic and Anglican traditions, which will see the King and Pope praying together.
The service in the Sistine Chapel will be focused on protecting nature, in recognition of the King's enthusiastic support of environmental causes.
It also aims to show harmony between the two religious denominations, with the Sistine Chapel Choir singing alongside the Choir of St George's Chapel and the Choir of His Majesty's Chapel Royal.
Mr Paisley's father, Ian Paisley, was a former Northern Ireland first minister who founded the DUP, now Northern Ireland's largest unionist party, in 1971.
However, before his career in politics was his life in religion – he became a religious minister as a young man and went on to found the Free Presbyterian Church.
Along with fiery sermons, Ian Paisley became known for his opposition to Catholicism and the Pope.
To mark the death of Pope John XXIII in 1963, he said: "This Romish man of sin is now in hell."
Mr Paisley also protested against Pope John Paul II in 1988, when the Roman Catholic leader was giving an address at the European Parliament.
He interrupted the address, saying: "I denounce you, antichrist. I refuse you as Christ's enemy and antichrist with all your false doctrine."
He was then forcibly removed from the chamber.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Like father like son
>”not upholding his promise to defend a reformed faith when he mixes in that kind of way”.
Don’t be MIXING with them good heavens your majesty.!
Lolz
A united Ireland and a united church in my lifetime… didn’t have that on my bingo card.
What a Christ-like thing to say.
This is kids in the street stuff. “MY imaginary sky-fairy can beat up YOUR imaginary sky-fairy”.
What a load of shite.
Surely you could even pray alongside a rabbi or an imam, who don’t even follow Christ, and that doesn’t take away from your faith.
I was in Thailand, saw some Buddhist monks out getting donations in businesses, I threw a few baht into their sack, the guy raised his hand and presumably blessed me. It doesn’t make me a Buddhist.
Yeah, imagine thinking this kind of bullshit was finally behind us eh?, trust a Paisley to bring crashing back to the 60s……the 1660s.
That would be an ecumenical matter
Family full of melters!
Insecure much, Kyle?
>”The Protestant faith historically and theologically is a world apart from Catholicism,” added Mr Paisley.
Anglicans aren’t technically Protestant, and the Church of England has historically wavered between the two poles going way back to Henry VIII’s time. Speaking very generally, with the exception of the Protectorate, mainstream Anglicianism has been closer to the RCC in terms of practice and doctrine than it ever was to Presbyterianism. So that’s bollocks.
British nationalists are speedrunning a United Ireland
Two descendants of a line of Popes and Monarchs: Let’s have moment of thoughtfulness and pray together
Descendant of Paisley: NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Hilarious telling the King he isnt proddy enough.
Literally never heard of him.
Edit: I should have added before reading the article, I don’t think some people understood that concept.
I was trying to get off with a church of Ireland girl at QUB. She was very involved with the church so I went along with her on a Sunday to their ‘communion service’.
The CofI service was practically identical to Catholic mass. I recalled three minor differences. For ‘holy communion’ they all drank actual wine, the ‘Our Father’ was the extended mix and at the part of mass where Catholics shook hands as a ‘sign of peace’ in CofI people hugged each other. At this point they would have spotted me as a Catholic had anyone been bothered.
My efforts at getting off with the girl were ultimately unsuccessful. But there is very little difference between the two faiths Sunday service/ mass.
Both Christians. Don’t see the issue
This is the same bloke you all took seriously over his United Ireland views. He’s clearly not playing with a full deck.
Well he’s done it so my advice would be to get over it
Now should the Pope abdicate since he’s prayed with a Protestant?
Not even bothered about the nonce brother then? Quelle surprise.
It’s all a load of fuckin nonsense. Rules made up by white men to rule white men.
What a wild flash back! Haven’t heard a fucking Paisley spouting their non Christian beliefs for decades.
Just some other Paisley crapper. Just ignore it and carry on.
Oh, do calm down.
You can tip your hat to other people’s gods or beliefs without chucking your own in the skip.
Charles hasn’t suddenly gone full multi-faith yoga guru. He’s just swapped Defender of the Faith for Defender of the Faiths to reflect the contemporary fabric of the broder country and appears to be putting those sentiments into practice.
Britain’s been a religious jumble sale for decades. Churches, mosques, temples, humanist book clubs, all shoulder to shoulder. The King acknowledges that isn’t “woke,” it’s just awake.
Let’s not pretend he’s doing anything wild. Charles has shaken the hands of the Aga Khan, the Dalai Lama, probably a dozen patriarchs and prophets. It’s his thing – a polite smile, a murmured blessing, and back to Highgrove for a cup of something organic.
(I could be wrong) Didn’t Camilla adopt Catholicism as a precondition of her first marriage (Andrew Parker Bowles) – maybe she still practices it (even after the marriage was dissolved) and Charles (in addition to his usual diplomatic tenor) was prompted to reach out and engage in the above ceremony on that basis?
Is it really such a big thing? ..
England: no one gives a shit what the king is doing
N. Ireland: this twat
Ear genes are very strong in this family
Kyle isn’t the worst Paisley and options are like assholes every one has one. I don’t see why Charles Windsor would care.
Love thy fellow man. Something 4:11.
Unless there a taig
Take a day off
ahaha he pledges allegiance to that crown so bow down
I think he is nothing like his father. His father was hypnotising in his sermons, and by any measure, a true believer. In the same way as I have to begrudgingly respect Thatcher as someone who is motivated by high ideology, not cash, ego or status. Paisley Jr is just a talentless, Nepo political grifter after expenses: No moral motivation there. There is no similarity other than their blind hate of ‘papistry’. As detestable as ones enemies may be, it would be foolish not to recognise how incredibly rare a figure like Thatcher, Paisley or McGuinness really are.
Heard this on Talkback yesterday. He couldn’t definitively answer one of William Crawley’s questions. Maybe he shouldn’t go up against a theologian
People need to CTFD like just be happy
This is HILARIOUS
He’s a sad, sad person if this is the sort of thing he’s worrying about. It’s just the Pope praying with a sponge. It’s not a big deal.
Earlier in the year people were praising this looper as a shinning light of progressive, cross community thought and outreach because he had a token event where some Irish was spoken, even when it was crystal clear from his own words that he was using it as a tool to try and proselytize – *”Languages, including Irish, are “a gift of God to communicate and to make connections with people”*
The only connections they are interested in are direct debits taking 20% of your wages each month and they view the Irish language the same as everything else on the island; British property.
Scundered for all the Unionists finding out their King is a Lundy.

Annnd moving on with my day
Wait until he finds out that this god character probably isn’t real, and they’re all just talking to the ceiling.
The King should abdicate and the whole royal family should fuck off into the sea! Traitors!
Latest Private Eye had a story that William is considering dropping the oath to maintain the CoE and uphold the Protestant religion, so it would be very funny if Chuck did abdicate and that was the result poor Kyle got.
What a clown show, does he think the royals give one fuck about him or any of the rest of them
Paisley is a free Presbyterian- they don’t even see the monarch as the head of the church.
He might as well be criticising thr Dalai lama….
Sounds like Kyles only a few steps away from becoming a Republican
Why does NI continue to take religion seriously? I mean, consubstantiation versus transubstantiation? The Atonement? Really?
And monarchy? A German Greek family, one of whose members has been decorated as Nonce de Nonce with Oak Leaf Cluster, are the objects of such murderous loyalty from a section of the population?
Lads, lads, seriously?
