What is Russia’s current strategy in Ukraine? • FRANCE 24 English

Residents of Zaparia woke up again to the sounds of a Russian attack on their city. This damaged building is a school hit by a drone overnight. Russian troops who hold positions nearby often hit this area and its many power lines. Ukraine’s power grid is one of Moscow’s main targets. And as winter comes in, the pace of strikes intensifies. It’s what Kee calls the weaponization of winter like here in Sunumi where homes were damaged near a heat and power plant. There was a strike somewhere near the CHP plant and of course the blast wave damaged everything. At this point of the war, Russia controls some 116,000 square kilometers of Ukraine. That’s roughly 20% of its territory. This video is from the Russian Ministry of Defense who says Moscow is targeting military sites. Russia remains significant disruptive potential u by continuing its artillery shelling, drone attacks and strikes deep into Ukrainian territory and uh even u if it uh slows down its push on the front line, it still has this potential to continue um create damage and havoc. Ukraine is pushing to get more assistance from its allies to defend itself from missile and drone attacks. Its forces on the ground are resisting a Russian push on their 1,000 kilometer front line. The Ukrainians have targeted Russian oil facilities, hoping that the curb in oil exports coupled with economic sanctions from its allies will damage Russia’s capacity to finance the war.

Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine started more than 3 years ago – and Trump has been pushing to end it even at the cost of Ukraine abandoning its invaded territories to Russia. After appearing to press Moscow, with the mention of long-range missiles that could be provided to Ukraine, Trump decided not to send the weapons at this point. But what is the current situation on the ground — how much territory does Russia control and what is its current strategy? Story by Shirli Sitbon.

  1. the russian strategy is to ensure the US and Europe keep doing the bare minimum to help Ukraine win the war. And it's working.

  2. Why are Tomahawks a big problem?
    – They have to be operated by the US (It would be a direct attack from the US to Russia)
    – They can carry Nukes (Keeping Russia guessing after each launch)

  3. Look, Putin owns the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. If Russia sells these weapons to nuclear aspiring countries (there will be many takers), the world will turn upside downside. Be careful what you wish for when you want to escalate this war.

  4. Russia goals and tactics has not changed since end of 2022. War of attrition, no quick arrow head attacks that costs un necessary loss of Russian lives, Deplete NATO military arsenal and stifle EU economies by their own stupid sanctions, pivot to the east where global growth is coming from and unfortunately deplete Ukrainian soldiers. Question is Will Russia also take back Odessa or only the 4 region they have annexed?

  5. Russian birthrate at historic lows. Even Russians hate each other. Putin having to pay university girls to breed with Russian dudes 😂
