RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAW) – World War II veteran Erwin “Erv” Kuhn celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday with a ceremony that included recognition from the Northwoods Honor Guard.
Kuhn was born in Russia, but his parents were forced out of the country due to Russian oppression at the time. The family fled to Canada before settling in the Northwoods.
During the war, Kuhn served as a senior enlisted member (TSgt) and communications specialist in the Army from 1944 to 1945. After his military service, he stayed in Europe a bit longer to study stenography at Oxford University.
During today’s celebration, the Northwoods Honor Guard named Kuhn an honorary member and performed a 21-gun salute. They also played Happy Birthday on bagpipes.
“It’s amazing. Just the community support and the honor that is bestowed toward him. It’s hard to put it into words,” said Steve Kuhn, Erwin’s son.
Steve said his father always made time for him and the family throughout his life. He said Erv has always been very spiritual and doesn’t recall a time his father ever raised his voice.
When asked about his longevity, Erv offered simple advice.
“Live a pure life—and stay off the liquor,” he said.
Steve expressed gratitude for the ceremony and those who participated.
“I have such gratitude for all the people who have served and then to go out of their way and the honor, I think, is especially meaningful coming from people who have also served,” he said.
Both Erv and Steve Kuhn said they were surprised to see everyone who came out for the celebration.
