October the 26th, 2025 – The most modern terminal in this part of Europe, Rijeka Gateway, has opened a brand new chapter for Croatian logistics and the overall positioning of Rijeka.
As Poslovni Dnevnik/VL/Snjezana Bicak writes, the much anticipated and giant Rijeka Gateway project, hailed as the most modern, most important and technologically advanced container terminal in this part of Europe, officially began its operational phase a few months ago. That occurred owing to the arrival of the first commercial ship, Al Jasrah, after two years of construction and equipping the terminal.

This is the largest private investment in logistics in all of Croatia, worth as much as 380 million euros, and was created from a joint investment by APM Terminals (A.P. Moller – Maersk) and the domestic company ENNA Logic, which operates as part of the ENNA Group.
This project has fundamentally changed the appearance of the Port of Rijeka and opened a new chapter for Croatian logistics as a whole. It has very successfully positioned Rijeka as a hub of port traffic, ahead of the neighbouring Adriatic ports of Trieste and Koper.
The terminal, which isn’t yet fully completed, already occupies 400 metres of shoreline, a depth of 20 metres and a capacity of 650,000 TEUs per year, which will increase to 680 metres of shoreline and a capacity of more than one million TEUs after the planned terminal expansion. The new terminal is equipped with the most modern infrastructure; it has four remote-controlled ship cranes, 15 wheeled cranes, two rail-mounted cranes and 28 terminal tractors. Operations at the terminal are being managed with the latest technology with full automation and the use of energy from renewable sources, making the terminal the first of its kind in the entire Adriatic region.

Al Jasrah, which sailed into the Port of Rijeka with container cargo and thus “opened” the terminal’s operations, was 368 metres long and 51 metres wide. The ship arrived in Rijeka from Port Said in Egypt, as part of the Asia-Europe route, and the ship’s captain was welcomed by representatives of Rijeka Gateway Peter Corfitse and Tomislav Rosandić, as well as the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković. He said that this was a historic moment not only for Rijeka and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, but also for the whole of Croatia. He emphasised that with its full capacity of one million TEU, this terminal opens a new chapter in the development of Rijeka’s transport and Croatian logistics.
“This is a really big deal for the Port of Rijeka, the Rijeka traffic route and the entire port and traffic system of Croatia. We have the first “mothership” ship connected to the new, sustainable, green and technologically most advanced container terminal in this part of Europe. When we add up all the investments in the terminal and traffic infrastructure, both private and public, from roads to the railway interface in and around the port, we arrive at a figure of around 600 million euros of investment related to the Rijeka Gateway project.
There is of course the investment in the construction of 400 metres of coastline financed by a World Bank loan, the construction of the DC 403 connecting road, the internal port road, the new inter-modal terminal and the railway interface for the new terminal and finally, the concessionaire’s investment in the development of the waterfront and terminal equipment; from STS cranes, warehouse and portal cranes for reloading wagons to other, various equipment. There’s also the concessionaire who is investing 380 million euros in the Rijeka port system, which has created new jobs and employed 250 young professionals so far. All of the aforementioned brings the Port of Rijeka and the entire Croatian transport system to a leading position in the northern Adriatic and the wider region”, said Denis Vukorepa, Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority.
more than just infrastructure…

They have stated from Rijeka Gateway that this brand new and ultra-modern terminal is more than just infrastructure. “We’re proud of our 250 employees, and soon we will have 300. In this operational phase, everything we have built, from the infrastructure to the team, functions every single day at the highest level of operational excellence that our customers expect. I’m convinced that Rijeka Gateway can be one of the best terminals in this part of the world,” said Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway.
With the Rijeka Gateway terminal, Rijeka has transformed into a key terminal on one of the world’s most important shipping routes. It’s expected that regular ship arrivals will strengthen Croatia’s connection to global supply chains and contribute to the economic growth of the entire region.
