It's a pretty known ad but I never got the actual context

  1. Tout semble être parti d’un post Facebook. Probablement une pub par un brasseur belge dans les années 30/40/50. Peut-être un fake créé de toute pièce, dur de savoir.

  2. Ok so as far as I remember from history class, in the early ̶1̶9̶ 20th century, beer wasn’t really seen as an alcoholic drink. For context, most beer was more like Pied de bÅ“uf, “tafelbier”, which was served in schools to children because it was considered healthier than the contaminated water.

So people – read: working class – would prefer stronger drinks, think jenever, and spend their wages on it the moment they got paid. To combat that, a law was passed prohibiting bars selling those alcoholic drinks, or making it harder anyway (think taxes X4).

Which is actually what led to our current beer culture: to fill the void of the jenever, beers got stronger and stronger, and that is (more or less) why tourists today are warned about drinking with us.
