  1. At *The Atlantic*, [Michael McFaul](https://www.hoover.org/profiles/michael-mcfaul) provides an overview of the arguments in his new book, *Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder*. The former US ambassador to Russia sees both short-term challenges to the western-led global system as well as longer-term fundamental advantages for the United States and its democratic allies. As he notes:

    >America and its allies wield more collective military power than China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. And they’re richer: Nine of the 10 [largest economies](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?most_recent_value_desc=true) are democracies. (China is the only exception.)

While warning that the current administration “is unwinding the country’s alliances, degrading its principles, walling off its economy, and subverting international institutions that serve its interests,” McFaul maintains that “democracy remains more popular than dictatorship” in most places around the world.

In his book, McFaul considers how lessons from the Cold War as well as new strategies derived from extensive research can help to preserve international prosperity and American global leadership.
