New Zealand began their ODI series against England with a convincing four-wicket win in Mount Maunganui. England, after a top-order collapse, were rescued by captain Harry Brook, who played a brilliant lone hand of 135 off just 101 balls to lift his team to 223 in 35.2 overs. Jamie Overton chipped in with 46, but Zakary Foulkes (4/41) and Matt Henry (2/53) ensured the visitors never fully recovered.
The hosts made a shaky start in reply, losing Will Young and Kane Williamson early to Brydon Carse (3/45). However, Daryl Mitchell anchored the chase with an unbeaten 78, while Michael Bracewell added 51 in a steadying partnership of 92 runs. Mitchell, alongside skipper Mitchell Santner (27*), guided New Zealand home with 80 balls to spare, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
