“Under current emission trends, the upper tipping point threshold of 1.5°C for coral reefs could be crossed within the next decade. Even under the most currently optimistic scenario of stabilising warming at 1.5 °C, all coral reefs are virtually certain to globally tip

  1. I attended a presentation by two National Geographic photographers in the early 2000’s. When confronted with questions about climate change and coral reef health, they said the horse was already out of the barn. Twenty years ago!

  2. We passed 1.5C last year. We are now sitting at 1.55C.

  3. Aren’t coral reefs part of “the economy” since they are a major tourist drawcard? What is the point of encouraging economic growth when it is so destructive? Something is wrong with economics.

  4. Can someone explain to me why coral reefs dying is a climate tipping point?

Climate consequence sure, but how does a bunch of humans dying due to lack of food once provided by the reef system cause an acceleration of global CO2e?  If anything, killing people reduces emissions of CO2e…

  5. They are shrinking—and shrinking fast, exponentially—despite being one of the most diverse, if not the most diverse, ecosystems on the planet. It’s sad.
