India and the European Union are in the final stages of negotiating a landmark free trade agreement aimed at bolstering economic ties and stabilizing the global economy. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted that finalizing the deal would significantly strengthen democratic forces during a meeting with an EU trade delegation.
Both parties have expressed commitment to concluding the deal by December 2023, and recent discussions have shown substantial progress, particularly in market access and the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) chapter. The negotiations have already successfully addressed issues related to customs, digital trade, and sustainable food systems.
As the EU remains India’s largest trading partner, with a significant trade volume recorded in 2023-24, the agreement promises to further enhance bilateral economic partnerships. Continuous dialogue between the two regions demonstrates a strong mutual commitment to economic collaboration and development.
