“Only normal people with normal feelings & normal problems. Ahh I love this film!! Janus Films debuted the first US trailer for an Icelandic dark comedy film titled The Love That Remains, a sly break up movie from Hlynur Pálmason. This premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year & was one of the best films of the fest – it also recently played at NYFF. Anna, an artist, and Magnús, a fisherman, live with their three children & charismatic sheepdog in the quiet grandeur of the Icelandic countryside. As fractures in their marriage come to the surface, the couple try to hold onto the afterimages of a life together and make sense of a deep & lingering devotion. Filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason (also of the immaculate Godland) brings surprising humor and emotional weight to this gorgeous, intimate, and brilliantly expansive scenes from a marriage, amidst the majestic backdrop of the changing seasons. Starring Saga Garðarsdóttir, Sverrir Guðnason, Ída, Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Grímur Hlynsson, Þorgils Hlynsson, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Anders Mossling. And Panda the doggie. I’m lucky to be quoted in this trailer and on the poster! It’s also Iceland’s official selection for Best International Feature Film for this year’s Oscars. What a brilliant trailer.
Here’s the first US trailer (+ poster) for Hlynur Pálmason’s film The Love That Remains, from YouTube:

A year in the life of a family as parents navigate their separation. Through playful and heartfelt moments, the film portrays the bittersweet nature of faded love and shared memories amidst the changing seasons. The Love That Remains, originally known as Ástin sem eftir er in Icelandic, is written and directed by the acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason, director of the films Winter Brothers, A White, White Day, and Godland previously, as well as a few other shorts. Produced by Anton Máni Svansson and Katrin Pors. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival as one of our favorites of the fest (read our review) and it also played at NYFF and London. Janus Films will release Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains in select US theaters starting on January 30th, 2026 early next year. Who wants to watch this?
