NORSBORG, Sweden — In a significant step toward strengthening ties between the religious and political institutions of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, a delegation from the Syriac-Assyrian Political Parties Committee met with bishops of the Assyrian Church of the East.
Held at Orhoy Hall, the meeting included the former Bishop of Canada Mar Emmanuel Joseph (Yosip) and Bishop of Scandinavia and Germany Mar Odisho Oraham.
The primary goal of the visit was to discuss the current situation of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in both their homelands and the diaspora, and to explore ways to unify efforts in advancing their national cause. The discussions addressed the status of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Iraq and Syria, the relationship between political parties and churches, and the community’s core demands.
The committee highlighted its collaborative work across various sectors, stressing the urgent need for a unified front to achieve the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people’s aspirations in their ancestral land of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia). Political representatives underscored the importance of such meetings in strengthening relationships among all Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) parties and Churches, affirming that cooperation is essential to preserving their national identity and fostering unity across their homeland amid current challenges.
Mar Emmanuel Joseph (Yosip) expressed his delight at the meeting, noting his pleasant surprise at seeing a committee that unites all parties under one umbrella. Mar Odisho Oraham, in turn, thanked the attendees, assuring them that the Church would always stand alongside the people’s institutions and political movements, emphasizing that “they are all walking on the same path.”
The meeting marked a step forward in establishing constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation between the Church and political organizations for the welfare and stability of the people of Beth Nahrin, wherever they may reside.
