“I have a personal disagreement [with Queen Letizia]. She did not contribute to the cohesion of our family relations,” the former head of state asserts in a chapter of his memoirs.

King Juan Carlos seems to blame her for his estrangement from Felipe VI . In one of the articles about the book published today, Paris Match magazine claims, for example, that Queen Letizia has encouraged him to distance himself from her, and the same with their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía , whom, according to the same magazine, the Queen does not allow to "communicate with their grandfather." "My son turned his back on me out of a sense of duty. I understand that as king he must maintain a firm public stance, but I suffered from his insensitivity," he says in another passage.

Whether or not their version of events is true, it is undeniable that since King Juan Carlos left Spain, there have been very few occasions when the King and Queen have been seen together in public. In every instance, there was a family excuse justifying a photograph of the four monarchs together: funerals such as those of Queen Elizabeth II or Constantine of Greece, or family gatherings like Infanta Elena's 60th birthday .

With his granddaughters, however, there are no photos since 2018. Last year, it was revealed that he had taken advantage of one of his frequent trips to Sanxenxo to visit Leonor at the Naval Academy in Marín (Pontevedra). He also attended her 18th birthday dinner at El Pardo Palace, but the Royal Household did not release any images of these recent family gatherings.

  1. Blaming the gf/wife for your baby growing up and making big boy decisions for himself? The rich are just like us!

  2. “I’m so corrupt I had to abdicate and leave the country, but my daughter-in-law is the problem for putting some boundaries in place.”

  3. Juan Carlos nearly toppled the Spanish monarchy with his corruption and scandals and handed his son a total shit sandwich.  Just *maybe* it’s not a Letizia problem.

  4. This reminds me of Omid Scobie saying in one of his books that Kate didn’t help bridge the gap between the brothers because her loyalty was to William, no joke? 😭😭 Someone’s loyalty being to their spouse over their spouse’s family member is the norm.

  5. Lol he cheated on his wife thus making him a shitty husband* and father and professionally he nearly toppled the Spanish Monarchy. Like what

  6. Good for Letizia. It was said she encouraged Felipe to distance himself from his sister Cristina and her ex-husband Inaki long before their crimes were exposed. Letizia was blamed for the “family tensions” but she was proven right to do so.

It’s not well-known outside of royal watchers nowadays, but years ago, part of Cristina and Inaki’s emails were leaked as part of investigation to their fraud and embezzlement. And some emails were making fun and mocking Letizia, including laughing at the insult of calling her “Putizia” (Letizia + puta), and sharing with each other the cruel comic published by a Spanish magazine portraying Felipe and Letizia in a sexual position.

The Borbons have never treated Letizia kindly. She has kept her mouth shut for more than 2 decades and has caught every bit of vitriol the Spanish media hurled at her. Juan Carlos’s staff had used her as a scapegoat then and he’s still using her as a scapegoat now. His daughter and ex-son in law are actual criminals and so is he, yet it’s Letizia he’s blaming for the breakdown of his relationship with Felipe? Lol

  7. Pretending for a moment that this is true, if he was my father-in-law I wouldn’t want him around me and mine either

  8. Maybe only his legendary number of mistresses are caring about what he is saying.

  9. I love the queen. She’s done nothing but help Spain get their monarchy back in order after everything was exposed and she’s done a great job of helping prepare the two sisters for a life of royalty. Always got on blame on woman with a man decides they don’t wanna be around another man.

  10. Yeah. Blame your daughter-in-law for the family dynamics you created YEARS before she married in.
Also: King Felipe can decide on his own. It’s not his wife’s responsibilty or fault.

  11. If that is true, all the more respect to her! Good job.

  12. Or Juan Carlos, Letty read you for the filth that you are – as a person and king – and put up boundaries around her family. Just like always there is zero accountability from you and blame to everyone else. No one asked for your book and no one cares, truly.

  13. Letizia has a strong personality, I would not doubt this is true.

At the end, Letizia is just doing her job as Queen 🫡

  14. Yeah. Angry privileged rich white dude blaming  strong independent woman for his failures as a person.

  15. This book will probably help Letizia’s popularity. JC is pretty despised, so more sympathy will go to her. It was the opposite when she was condemned for her treatment of Sophia, who is loved.

  16. Wow. And he reportedly has unflattering things to say about Princess Diana in the book too. He’s not holding back. Very un-regal of him and a strange calculation.

  17. I think Juan Carlos’ behavior did much more damage🙄

  18. Is this the guy who shot his little brother during Easter while playing with a gun?

  19. You don’t help “family cohesion” by repeatedly and publicly cheating on your wife either. Dick.

  20. Ah yes let’s blame the woman, cause he is an angel from heaven

  21. I guess all the cheating doesn’t help the “family coesion” either Juan…..

  22. cheating and embezzling is going to endear you to your family in what planet JC?

  23. There was a joke when I was younger. If you had a flat tire it was more probable to see king Juan Carlos on his motorbike (visiting a mistress) than the tow truck.

  24. Spouses take marital oaths to be loyal to each other above all others. Wasn’t JC present at this wedding?
