When it comes to cars, Americans are living large. There was much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth over the price of electric cars for many years, but there is nary a whimper of protest about the cost of these gargantuan SUVs.

>“Ultimately, the popularity of big SUVs turns on Americans’ love of large. From homes to TVs, steaks and stores, US consumers tend to default to a more-is-more mantra,” according to Bloomberg. Joseph Yoon, an analyst for Edmunds, put it this way. “We go to giant warehouse stores to buy giant boxes of things with our big dogs in the backseat. It’s part of the American lifestyle. We drive on big roads that we share with big rigs and other big trucks. Americans love large cars.”
I do find it pretty wild. Every article about EVs is relentless about talking about price, how “no one can afford these cars.” When the median car price in the US just passed $50,000, that means PLENTY of people could easily afford an EV if they wanted one.
I wonder what the root cause is here? Why do we feel so comfortable stretching so far to take out loans for cars now compared to years ago? Is it all the people who can’t afford homes deciding to spend money on cars instead?
It’s almost like all the outrage was manufactured.
I see prices on the windshields of huge SUVs and pickups at a nearby dealership. These seem hilarious to me. I saw one last week for $102,000 lol. I can’t understand who is buying them. This area isn’t that wealthy.
