Lafourche Parish Fire District 3 released an update this morning on a natural gas wellhead release that occurred last night just southeast of Golden Meadow.

The local fire district said in a news release that federal and state agencies are continuing their coordinated response to the release, which occurred near Bayou Lafourche on Oct. 31. Response crews are working actively to shut off the wellhead and secure the release throughout the day today.

Personnel teams from the U.S. Coast Guard, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality all remain on the scene and are continuing to coordinate joint response operations.

Light surface sheening has been seen in the immediate area of the release and it has dissipated quickly. Workers have deployed about 2,800 feet of containment boom around the site as a precaution.

Air monitoring is ongoing southeast of Golden Meadow but as of this time, no concerning levels of air quality have been detected. Monitoring will continue to ensure the safety of residents and also of response personnel.

A 1,000-meter zone has been established around the wellhead to protect nearby mariners and responders while operations to secure the release are underway.
