  1. Combined population 10,000. It probably should be on a priority list given a lot of the track still seems to be in place for industrial use, though I’m sure it’d need a lot of investment. That said, it’s probably behind the following on the list of bigger areas:

    – Church Village / Llantwit Fardre – 30k
    – East Cardiff – 29k+
    – Porthcawl – 17k
    – Tredegar – 15k
    – Ely – 15k (and a lot more if you include Caerau)
    – Lliswerry – 14k
    – West Newport – 14k
    – Gorseinon – 14k
    – Caerleon and Ponthir – 13k

  2. This is the Rhynmey Railway line; after Llancaiach there was a junction where it crossed over the valley and ran to Aberdare, or, taking the other route, via Bedlinog to Cwmbargoed and Dowlais.

It could work with stations at, say, Tredomen, Nelson, Llancaiach, Trelewis and Bedlinog – and then services at worst between there and Ystrad Mynach – you’d need a new platform to be constructed, but certainly doable especially as there is now no freight as far as I can see.

You could even save money by using a 398 with charging points at Ystrad Mynach and at stations.

Let’s see what the consultants say though….track would need to be brought to passenger standards, stations built, though signalling if the line is “single train in steam” would be trivial.

  3. Spend a few billion on it and call it a Uk project
