HUKOU, Taiwan, Oct 31 (Reuters) – Taiwan does not want China’s “one country, two systems” and must uphold its freedom and democracy, and resolve to defend itself, President Lai Ching-te said on Friday, rejecting Beijing’s latest push to get the island to come under Chinese control.
China said this week it “absolutely will not” rule out using force over [Taiwan](https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-says-it-absolutely-will-not-rule-out-use-force-over-taiwan-2025-10-29/), striking a much tougher tone than a series of articles in state media that pledged benign rule if the island comes over to Beijing under a system of autonomy it uses for Hong Kong and Macau.
Sometimes what you need, isn’t what you want. I think it would be foolish to expect Taiwan that until the 90s harbored notions of retaking the mainland to willingly submit to the CCP.
Therefore the USA needs to make a calculated decision, would they rather let Taiwan have death before dishonor or to be the bad guys and do the necessary evil by betraying them and forcing them to take the “one country, two systems”? Both are valid, but no matter how much support the US provides, it won’t be the Americans on the receiving end of Xi Jinping’ wrath… I say this because I fear deterrence just won’t deter much longer.
Remember Hong Kong anyone?
In other news, Zelensky says he opposes Russia’s attempted annexation of Ukrainian territory, Reuters reveals.
Should give Taiwan a nuclear deterrent. It’s what they’re for.
I think China’s in a decent spot overall, but its national story demands an outcome in Taiwan one that could end up costing far more than it’s worth.
Taiwan will definitely not “unite” with China at China’s current state. Taiwan is ranked highly for human rights and freedoms. Taiwan joining China would be a lifestyle downgrade for Taiwanese.
The only way Taiwan would ever consider working with China would be if China becomes a democracy, establishes a supranational system like the EU where it recognizes each state as a sovereign, independent country, and invites Taiwan to join.
Why doesn’t Taiwan just blow up the Three Gorges Dam if China tries to invade?
So, they are gonna get One Country, One System if this continues.
Bur, but it worked so well in Hong Kong?
