Albert Ganado, one of Malta’s most prominent map collectors, has passed away at the age of 101.  

In a post on social media, The National Archives of Malta said: “We recall with gratitude the memory of Dr Albert Ganado. We are grateful for his significant contribution to our country and recall his commitment towards the National Archives and their development. Dr Ganado was Chairman of the National Archives Advisory Committee and lately he has deposited a significant number of records related to his life and research. Thank you Dr Ganado.”

Ganado was a serviceman during the second world war, where he served in the Royal Malta Artillery as a gunner in 1941.

After the war, he became a lawyer and entered politics for a brief period.

Ganado developed an great collection of maps dating back centuries, and was awarded the prestigious Helen Wallis Award, in recognition of his contribution to cartography. 

He had given his map collection to the government in 2008, in exchange for his family home in Malta’s capital city of Valletta.
