    I have a Portuguese family and they all speak English really well, though they’re from the richer neighbourhoods.

  7. Hehe, while I speak English pretty well (lived in uk for 11 years), my accent is even fairly tamer now.
    But now that I am learning Swedish, I sound like I own 5 pizzerias and 3 kebab shops.

  17. The reason some of those countries are bad is because they dub movies, TV, Netflix etc. The biggest reason everyone speaks English here isn’t because we take it more seriously in school, it’s the fact that we don’t dub anything other than baby cartoons.

    Stop dubbing your TV and just use subtitles, and your English/French/German etc. proficiency will go up.

    I volontarily chose to learn German instead of English, even had to go to a middle school more than half an hour away by car instead of the one just a 10 minutes walk away but without a German class (so English was mandatory).

    And when I started learning English a few years later, I was so terrible at it my English teacher spoke to me in German instead.

    And contrary to any impression you might have, I still don’t speak any English. Officially at least.
