Holidays in Switzerland is not possible in this economy. We need to leave the country for 5 weeks per year to save money.
Because when a Murciano is in the dichotomy of:
1.Going to a place full of people they hate and can’t understand them,
2.Going to a place full of people they hate and can barely understand them,
The latter is always better and will probably also have people of the first group.
And don’t say it’s because we can’t afford to go abroad, because these days its cheaper to go a week to an all inclusive hotel in Mexico or Palma than to go one week in Algarve.

People do realise that some combination of the least well off and least interested in culture just want sun (plus cheap booze one can get anywhere) and so just take the shortest trip, directly south, right? It’s also why those countries’ tourists have the worst reputations in their target countries.
Ditto Russians in Turkey, Chinese in SE Asia, Americans in Mexican resorts…
People of Malta out there visiting their neighbor once every year

I just go to Andorra because it’s like 2hrs away. I once found a friend of mine dropping by just to buy cheap spanish wine and cigs
It’s all fun and games until northerners realize the speed of life in the Mediterranean. In business school in Spain I had water leaking from some ancient stone wall into an electric outlet for three months and everyone was like “it’s fine mañana”
And this is why if you are Spanish your only chance is to emigrate somewhere with better salaries or else stay with mediocre low salaries paired with high cost of living because our politicians will never do anything to improve the situation.
Looks to me like a PIGS cultural victory
I am pretty sure most people stay in their own country. And by that I don’t necessarily mean inside tourism, one could simply make day trips (or just walks) to nature and be done with that.
When they say “France –> France”, it’s actually the entirety of northern France fleeing to southern France every winter. So it does add up with the mediterranean master race theory
