Ukraine to Import American LNG via Greece to Boost Energy Security

According to the online media Ukrinform Ukrinform.

Ukraine’s willingness to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States via Greece proves that even in the most challenging conditions we find ways to advance shared strategic goals with the United States aimed at reducing Russia’s ability to wage war.

This position was voiced by Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington, Olha Stefanishyna, regarding the signing of a memorandum on the supply of American LNG to Europe and Ukraine.

Shared Strategic Goals of the United States and Ukraine

“We are grateful to the government of the United States of America and President Donald Trump for a consistent stance in depriving the Russian military machine of the ability to replenish its resources through the sale of energy resources”

– Olha Stefanishyna

She emphasized that the memorandum of understanding on importing American LNG via Greece confirms that Ukraine is not seeking excuses or easy solutions – unlike some European politicians who call for loosening sanctions against Russia.

According to the ambassador, even in the most challenging conditions Ukraine is looking for ways to strengthen shared goals with the United States, notably regarding reducing dependence on Russian energy supplies and increasing the country’s energy security.

Within the framework of the agreement Naftogaz signed a memorandum with the Greek company ATLANTIC-SEE LNG TRADE S.A. on the joint supply of US-origin liquefied natural gas to Europe and Ukraine through Greek gas terminals and theVertical Corridor. Also agreed are supplies of additional volumes of liquefied gas from the Polish ORLEN and American partners.

These steps demonstrate the consistency of Ukraine and the United States’ efforts to strengthen regional energy security and reduce Russia’s influence on the energy sector.
