An innovative six-month programme to treat diabetes was launched on Friday aimed at improving care for “one of Malta’s biggest health challenges”.
The Care4Diabetes programme represents “a turning point” in diabetes care offering a new multidisciplinary model that places prevention and patient support at the centre of the service.
The programme which was piloted over two cycles in Gozo, provides structured support over six months through a multidisciplinary team including doctors, dietitians, specialist nurses, and psychologists. It focuses on nutrition, physical activity, mental health, sleep quality, and stress management.
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the pilot cycles showed “very positive results” with participants reporting better blood sugar control, reduced dependence on medication, weight loss, and improved mental wellbeing.
He stressed that the programme not only provides better care but also promotes a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle by helping people understand and change their habits.
“When we talk about diabetes, we are not talking about statistics but about human lives, families, friends, and patients who face daily challenges,” Abela said, adding it is one of Malta’s biggest health challenges.
“Care4Diabetes does not offer a quick fix, but it provides the tools to change lifestyles. When a patient feels supported, their health improves — physically and emotionally.”
