Iranian’s capital Tehran faces possible mass evacuation due to sever water shortages • FRANCE 24
Thran is facing an unprecedented water crisis. That was the warning from the country’s president as reservoirs that supply Iran’s capital have plunged to their lowest levels in decades. As a result, rationing may not be enough. If it doesn’t rain, we’ll have to start rationing water in Tehran between late November and early December. Even if we do ration it and it doesn’t rain by then, we’ll run out of water. We’ll have to evacuate Tehran. In a sprawling city of around 9 million people, it’s a big task to evacuate and unclear how it would be done. The city has entered its sixth consecutive year of drought with some dams at less than 10% of capacity. This also has a knock-on effect on energy supplies as some power plants are forced offline due to a lack of cooling water. It’s not just the capital that’s facing water shortages. Iranian media reported that several provinces experienced a 50 to 80% decline in precipitation. While the lack of rainfall can be linked to climate change, the shortages have also been blamed on government policies and mismanagement.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned in a televised address on Friday that Tehran may have to be evacuated due to severe water shortages if no rain falls before the end of the year. Morgan Ayre reports.
