Japan has deployed his army to counter beat attacks • FRANCE 24 English

Holes in walls, chairs scattered about, refrigerator doors ripped from their hinges. This is the aftermath of a bear probably looking for food in a hot spring onen in northern Japan. The authorities killed it soon after the inn’s owner called the authorities. This 68-year-old was taken by surprise when he opened his garage and he found a bear sitting inside. This map shows the number of non-fatal bear attacks in yellow and bear attack deaths in red with a stark uptick in October. A record setting 13 people have died in bear attacks since April. More than doubling the previous record set in 2023. More than 100 people have been wounded in attacks across the country. According to experts, a warming climate has produced an abundance of food for bears in the mountains, creating an ideal environment for them to thrive, leading to a two-fold increase in Japan’s brown bear population to 12,000 over three decades and the swelling of its black bear population to 42,000. Some scientists are saying the mountains in certain areas are overcrowded. That with a declining rural human population means that the bears have more territory to themselves when they look for food. There were many bear sightings in 2023 and those bears gave birth. Now those young bears are growing up and coming down to town. There are huge number of bears in the mountains and the strongest ones dominate so weaker ones get pushed out. To deal with the threat, the Japanese government has deployed the military to aid in trapping and hunting while riot police are allowed to shoot the animals.

A record 13 people have died in over 100 bear attacks in Japan this year, with experts blaming food shortages as the animals venture further into residential areas. Simon Moritz has more.
