Turkey issues arrest warrant against Netanyahu for ‘genocide’ in Gaza • FRANCE 24 English

Let’s cross now to Noa Katanapolski, our Jerusalem correspondent. No, turn Turkeykey’s of course been a vocal critic of the war. So was this to be expected? Uh good morning Peter. It’s to be expected in a wider context in which uh the Turkish president uh Rev Erdogan has really become a more and more I would say uh extremist critic of Netanyahu who in recent months he can’t stop uh comparing to Adolf Hitler. He has used very very radical terminology to describe uh the Israeli leadership. These the issuance of these warrants comes in a context in which Turkey is vying for power in the postwar scenario being created right now by the United States. Now Erdogan like Orban who you mentioned earlier is known to be a favorite of Donald Trump. He’s uh one of the kind of um you know tough guy, strong men who Donald Trump is known to favor. Um but he’s also the leader of a NATO power. And so those uh all of these questions of how far can Turkey go while remaining a member of NATO in good standing uh and what Israel will take from Turkey. All of this is coming into play. Erdogan is jockeying against Qatar and Egypt, the two countries who have really stood out with their efforts to mediate the end of this war. Um and so he’s trying to make a statement. What is most worrisome from the Israeli point of view with this Turkish announcement is that I think only five top Israeli officials are named. Uh we know that 37 warrants have been issued. What this means is that there are 32 top Israeli officials that include members people who have nothing to do with the government. Uh for example, it could be former military uh officers or something. We don’t know who they are and they could be arrested even if they are in Turkish airspace it appears. So this vast kind of unknown situation of at least 32 involving at least 32 Israeli top officials that is what is making um Israel nervous and the fact that Erdogan does seem to hold quite a bit of sway with Donald Trump who has said time and again uh even as Prime Minister Netanyahu says Turkey cannot play a role because they support Hamas cannot play a role in the future of Gaza. Donald Trump continues to insist that Turkey must play an important role there. So, NOA, just let’s turn to another story now. We’re hearing reports this morning that the remains of a hostage returned from Gaza this week belonged to an Israeli Argentinian man. Do you have any more information for us on that? Absolutely. We’re speaking of Leor Rudif, whose remains were identified just or it was announced just in the last hour. He was born in Argentina. In fact, like you mentioned, he moved to Israel. He immigrated to Israel at the age of seven and spent his whole life in the south of the country on the kibuts of near Itak where he died at age 61 in 2023 uh trying to defend the perimeters of the kibuts. Um his family has become like others very well known in the in their case here and in Argentina. He left a very large family in Argentina. Um, and his family had grown, I would say, increasingly desperate. You know, as we’re kind of counting down now to the last bodies that still remain, the last bodies of hostages that still include, I want to add, a Thai citizen, a Thai agricultural worker who was in Israel at the time of the attack. So, it’s not even all Israelis, but the last families still waiting are getting more and more concerned that in their cases, the body may never be returned. And we did hear uh Leo Rudy’s daughter uh Noam speak about this with great fear this week. So, I’m sure it’ll be a great relief to his community that Leor Rudif’s u body has been um identified. And we also expect to hear from the Argentinian government that has been very much involved in his case. No gatanopolski there for us. Thank you so much Noga for that update.

Turkey on Friday announced it had issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli government officials for “systematically” perpetrating “genocide and crimes against humanity” in Gaza. France24 correspondent Noga Tarnopolsky reports the latest.

  1. great big talk now do some walk. only 37?????? the entire govt needs to be in jail
poor suffering invaders no bodies! imagine the 100,000 Palestinian families who wont ever see any bodies buried , found or not discovered till 2079

  2. Since you care so much about international law why dont you sign up to the ICC little Erdi, or UNCLOS? I mean you are so just, theres nothing to be afraid of, right? Constantinople prosecutor can only arrest your local political opponents, outside of your henhouse you have no power. But you can do as you please with the local turkish hens.

  3. Erdogan who has turned Turkey into a volatile basket case and cheated and jailed his way to power- even staged a fake coup 😂 credibility zero

  4. Realistically, they cant arrest people in who are in Israel but officially labeling the Israeli government as genocidal maniacs will bring awareness and hopeful motivate other countries to follow suit. People all over this planet deserve the right to sleep peacefully at night, knowing that a bomb or the IDF wont be there waiting for you when you wake up.

  5. Turkey still thinks we live in the ottoman empire right 😝😝, lets edogan go relaese all his opposition leaders and critics first

  6. The "extremist" position of looking to arrest a man wanted internationally for war crimes. Yeah, suuuuuuper extremist indeed

  7. I do not understand why people of oil rich gulf countries do not rebel against their Kingdom since they openly support Israel. Unbelievable

  8. Lol erdogan is just trying to portray himself as the savior of Palestinians… competing with UAE and Saudi Arabia and qatar…what a joke
