As part of its ongoing expansion across Asia, Klaveness has reinforced its footprint in Japan with the appointment of chartering specialist Junji Aratani to its Tokyo office. Aratani joins General Manager Haruki Chua, doubling the company’s presence in one of the world’s most influential maritime markets.

The move aligns with Klaveness’ strategic ambition to further integrate operations in the Pacific region by blending global expertise with local market understanding. Speaking to CSN, Chua emphasized that Japan is more than a satellite location for the group.

“Our goal is not to simply be a sales and support office,” he said. “We want our Japan office to be a key trading hub alongside Singapore, combining global reach with local knowledge to serve our customers better.”

Aratani brings extensive experience from Marubeni Corporation, where he worked in grain trading — a role that often placed him in close collaboration with Klaveness as a customer. That familiarity with the company’s operating culture played a key role in his decision to join the team.

“When the opportunity came to join Klaveness, I knew it was the right fit — a place where I could grow and help expand our reach in Japan,” Aratani noted.

Looking ahead, the focus for Klaveness Japan will be on strengthening business relationships built on transparency and reliability — two qualities particularly valued in the Japanese market.

“The Japan market is unique,” he explained. “Charterers look closely at post-fixture performance, so daily follow-up and reliability really matter. Even when there is no active business, staying connected and sharing insights is important.”

With significant growth ambitions, Klaveness aims to advance its role as a trusted, insight-driven partner in Japan — one that combines its global commitment to advancing the nature of shipping with tailored support for regional customers.
