  1. In before the “but i’m a white Finnish guy and i’ve never been a target of hate crime” crowd arrives.

  2. Absolutely dire news. However it’s important to publish these kind of news as simply anecdotal replies to the recurring question how racist or LGBTQ+ friendly country Finland is are just anecdotal.

This current economical situation of ours has surely added even more tension. And whats good to acknowledge, racism in Finland has diversified in pretty short time. It’s not anymore just that ‘classic’ meaning natives against immigrants, it can also be immigrants against immigrants or immigrants against natives.

TLDR: Maybe still a year ago I too would have answered (in my Capital area bubble) not that much racism going on. That is not the answer that I would give anymore, sadly.

  3. Not surprised, it feels like in 2020s an entire western society has just turned into a hateful social media slave.

  4. > There were again a third more suspected hate crimes directed towards disability than in the previous year. Reports related to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression are also increasing. Hate crime is therefore a diverse phenomenon that affects several different population groups,” Rauta said in the release.

Even disabled folks are not spared.

    That’s nice to know. 🙄

  5. Let me guess: replies will blame the right wing government

  6. There is very easy solution to this. Redefine hate crime and we have close to zero.

Now, that would make the country way, way shittier but that is always a solution: lets change the way we count things. Green apples are not apples anymore and suddenly our harvest looks very tiny in our apple orchard that is half and half.

  7. I am an immigrant myself and the first thing I noticed here is what you consider a hate crime. Like, you must really chill the fuck out, because in the capital area you’re very sensitive.

  8. Obviously the hate crime rate increases statistically if you start arresting people under hate crimes and you previously never did.

  9. are you sure it’s hate crime? What’s the definition of a hate crime? Someone making a racist joke on twitter? Someone asking a middle eastern guy who doesn’t speak Finnish where he’s from? or someone beating a black guy specifically because he’s black?

  10. Yeah, I call bullshit. The bar for hate crimes are very low in Finland and other European countries. The whole concept seems ludicrous to me.
