This special evening concert is being broadcast live from Victory Park in Rīga and combines two notable commemorations into one spectacular event.
It is 190 years since the birth of Krišjānis Barons, the father of Latvian folklore, and 110 years since Krišjānis Barons completed his life’s work, publishing his last volume of songs collected from across the country.
Therefore the November 11th concert programme will be held under the banner of folk songs. The concert will be opened by the group “Iļģi”, continued by the “Jauno Jāņu orķestris”, and the culmination of the holiday will be the program of new works “Saules mūžs” (Life of the Sun), with various renowed singers performing songs selected by specialists from the Krišjānis Barons Museum, plus brand new folk songs commissioned for the occasion.
At the conclusion of the concert there will also be pictures from Rīga Castle where the traditional lighting of candles will be taking place along its walls.
