  5. The thing that pisses me off is that;

    1. The two senior people who resigned from the BBC have left their staff holding the bag here. Even if Trump doesn’t win, the BBC might potentially be forking out A LOT of money to simply defend it and there has been reputational damage. That might trickle all the day down and result in some level of job cuts/pay freezes/recruitment freezes. All things that impact ordinary people.

    2. We don’t really know who spliced the video together here, and what their fate was… It’s all well and good the two senior people resigning and taking full accountability but, actually no, the people who did it should be held accountable to some extent as well.

  19. He can’t sue in the UK, because there is a one year time limit for bringing defamation cases from the date of publication which he’s already missed. He can’t sue in Florida, because a) the show did not air in Florida and b) the BBC does not operate out of and under the jurisdiction of Florida. His lawyers may well waste some of his own time and money fannying about trying to file vexatious cases before any number of courts, anywhere in the world, but ultimately it’s not going to go anywhere because there’s no court that can actually enforce a judgement against the BBC where he has a case.

  25. I love the BBC and think they are one of the best news sources on the planet, and certainly the best in the UK.

    With that said, they need to apologise and retract that piece. Even though I agree that Trump was the cause of the Capitol riots, the way the video was edited was wrong, misleading, and not up to the standard I expect as a license payer.

  28. I wonder where Trump (or his lawyers) are planning to bring this mythical lawsuit.

    * In the UK, it’s too late, the “offending broadcast” was over one year ago, so it’s too late to bring any action in the UK, plus the damages are assessed by the court.
    * In Florida, where Trump is registered at living, the program was not broadcast in the USA, and BBC iPlayer is not available there either. How can the program have affected Trump?

    I’m sure the BBC will apologise, but I doubt Trump will do anything, though Starmer might have a rather fraught conversation the next time they meet.

He’s going to have to prove the documentary/doctored further negatively effected his reputation in the country it was broadcast (At least that’s what lawyers I’ve seen being interviewed on TV have said) and that is such a big sell. People already know and have known for a while that Trump is a lying, narcissist grifter, using his office to enrich he and his buddies while rolling over and ignoring every caught that disagrees with him and trying to silence/get fired any media that speaks any I’ll of him or doesn’t carry on his absolute lies.

    I’m not saying the BBC didn’t mess up here but people have lost their jobs, if they roll over and fucking pay him off as well when I can guarantee this didn’t shift the needle of anyone, be they pro or anti trump. I can’t see this changing anyone’s opinion on Trump at all.
