UK fans express confidence ahead of early Battle of the Bluegrass

  • 12.11.2025

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Kentucky basketball fans expressed confidence in their team ahead of Tuesday’s Battle of the Bluegrass against Louisville, marking the earliest the rivalry game has been played in the modern era.

The matchup came during UK’s third regular season game, moving the traditional rivalry to an unprecedented November date.

At KS Bar in Lexington, Wildcats fans gathered to show their support before the game. UK student Eric Salano said the team has potential for a deep tournament run.

“We have the possibility of going all the way,” Salano said.

Fellow UK student Emma Vanhorn acknowledged the challenge ahead while maintaining optimism about the team’s chances.

“Obviously we want UK to win. The cats to win. It’s going to be a very tough game – very physical but I think we got it,” Vanhorn said.

UK fan Tom Lloyd said basketball culture runs deep in Kentucky families and communities.

“Basketball has been the driving force behind UK longer than I’ve been here, longer than you’ve been here or than any of us have been here,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd explained that growing up in Kentucky often means becoming part of Big Blue Nation by default.

“Kentucky basketball traditionally has been something people have been able to depend on in the state of Kentucky. And I think that is why you have a fan base that is so passionate,” Lloyd said.

The stakes felt particularly high for fans, with Lloyd noting the extended wait between rivalry games.

“We got to win; it’s a simple as that. Going a year into between games is a lot tougher if you lose,” Lloyd said.

Fans expressed excitement about new head coach Mark Pope and his potential impact on the program.

Vanhorn said Pope’s Kentucky background gives him insight into what it takes to succeed against Louisville.

“Going to Kentucky and everything he knows what he needs to do to beat the cards tonight and I think he’s got it in him, and I think he knows what to do,” Vanhorn said.

The Wildcats return to Rupp Arena on Friday to face Eastern Illinois.
