Lithuania’s media report state LINAVA published an official statement saying the government’s decision to close the border with Belarus has resulted in a severe economic blockade for carriers on November 11th. The carriers’ association is demanding at least one border crossing be opened and transport companies be protected and evacuated, as well as measures be prepared to compensate for losses.
Erlandas Mikenas, Head of LINAVA, emphasised that carriers are angry about the situation at the border and did not rule out the possibility that truck drivers could block roads in Lithuania and hold other protests. According to him, the decision to block roads in Lithuania may be taken at an association congress on November 12th.
“This decision does not depend on me. Tomorrow we will hold a congress, a general meeting of the members, and we can sense what the carriers feel. There are proposals to block roads and similar events,” Erlandas Mikenas.
Earlier, LINAVA asked the Lithuanian government to present a clear action plan and take measures as soon as possible to ensure Lithuanian vehicles return and the drivers are safe. LINAVA said that the current situation poses a serious threat to many jobs and the stability of the entire transport industry in a letter to Lithuania’s Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene.
