When we say look after our own we mean use the taxes we pay to protect them from being murdered and raped by not our own. But from a financial stand point we’re pretty much capitalists where people are responsible for earning their own capital and shouldn’t need to rely on others for their failures.

I don’t support reform tho why should I sustain the lifestyle choices of other people? If someone is stupid enough to not realise that they are too poor to have 3-4 kids, why should the tax-payer step in for the parents’ irresponsibility?
I literally have never heard anything against lifting the child benefit cap from any right wing circle.

the closest I’ve heard someone being against child benefit is someone that wanted it separated by nationality and ethnicity because they were explicitly a nativist. and even then that’s not stopping it that’s just restricting the scope of it. and most nativist groups are usually for lifting the cap entirely.

The issue isn’t about child benefit cap as such, but the reality that a lot of high-earners can end up worse off than low-earners or the perpetually unemployed.
In this context many high earners who cannot themselves afford multiple children, let alone more than 2, are quite reasonably asking why their taxes are going to fund a luxury that they themselves can’t afford for those who contribute materially less to society.

Let’s change the argument phrasing to Britain should be self-sufficient. Why should we import cheap labour to do work Britons are capable of. Many people can’t afford full costs of child rearing because of terrible past governments but that shouldn’t give people an out to pump out as many kids as they want. There has to be a limit. There should be other incentives like tax reductions to encourage bigger families. We shouldn’t have to pay for their choices.

Tbf the two child cap is in genius, my sister is a jobless bumb who kept pumping out kids gambling for a boy, the cap soon stopped her at three. Doesn’t even look after those kids. I have two kids of my own and even with both me and my partner working we just about keep on top of the bills and food. Don’t know how those dirty scroungers can afford it.
I don’t see that, as a supposedly left wing person, I should automatically support giving people money to have as many kids as they want regardless of how able they are to take care of those said kids.
If there is one thing in society that keeps people poor and uneducated, it’s the perpetuation of negative cycles. Having lots of children, very young, whilst on benefits is one of those damaging cycles.
I love how middle class left leaning people practically celebrate teenage pregnancies in poor communities – whereas they’d rather die than their own children become pregnant under the age of 30.
I’m not saying don’t provide for all children. I’m saying don’t keep giving people money for having multiple offspring.

I pay a load of money in tax and stopped at a couple of kids, but I have people in my family who are living on handouts with no intention of working and have lots. To me those particular people are not some hypothetical ‘other’ which I turn into an ideological punching bag, I’m just fucking sick of funding them. Use the child benefit money to support children in a more direct way don’t just hand it to the parents.
