Police have made 29 arrests following unrest inside a migrant facility in Serres in the north of the country.
According to reports, residents at the facility in the Municipality of Sintiki cut through a wire fence, threw stones at police officers, and set fire to clothing.
A large police force quickly arrived at the scene, using stun grenades to disperse the crowd and making several arrests. The Fire Department also responded and contained the blaze before it could spread.
The disturbance reportedly broke out after several migrants were notified that their asylum applications had been rejected. A group of around a dozen young residents allegedly breached an internal fence separating the first of the facility’s two security zones.
Authorities said the situation has since been brought under control. A roll call is being conducted to ensure no one has escaped from the facility, which is believed to house around 780 people.
