  1. Who will be most sad about this?

Rich people? The Swiss themselves? *Who* will tell Oprah that she can’t afford designer purses? *Who* will keep money safe for military juntas and the children of African dictators? *Who* will deny citizenship to people just because they don’t like skiing? *Who* will look down on us then?

Answer these questions and I may dry my tears 😭

  2. Aren’t like daycare for kids 2000 euros a month or something there? Great country for billionaires funneling their wealth. Not so much for ordinary working people who wants to create families.

  3. Switzerlqnd votes right wing shit regularly. No surprised there. Enjoy the bed you made / bute sure the next round of getting rid of foreigners will fix it…

  4. Par for the course. This is happening everywhere and getting worse.

Unknown, radical changes to our way of life are needed if this is ever to be reversed.

  5. Cost of living is ridiculously expensive there, it’s a big factor. Health insurance is mandatory, accident insurance for work, etc. There’s a reason why a lot of people in the western parts live in France but work in Switzerland

  6. In my circles, mostly highly educated people between 30-45, people aren’t having kids not so much because of the financial burden, which we could easily carry, but because having kids/a family is frankly too much of a disruption in one’s life, that most of us just aren’t interested.

Sounds shallow, but that’s the bottom line. There are absolutely no benefits to being a parent. No social recognition, no advantage in the work place, nada.

Beyond the maternity leave guaranteed by law, you are expected to perform exactly the same.

We have built a society, where everyone is expected to have a carreer, and women are finally catching up with men. What’s the incentive to give any of that up, in order to deal with dirty laundry and baby food?

You want people to have kids? You need to offer (to both M and F):

    – guaranteed remote work

    – reduced nr of hours of work with no loss in pay

    – guaranteed possibility of resuming your carreer even after a multi year interruption

Considering all of the above are just the bare minimum and would nevertheless already require the state to intervene drastically within an otherwise very liberal economic frame, it is honestly never going to happen.
