Azerbaijan and Iceland will meet again in a new chapter of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a duel with very different histories and realities.

The two teams have faced each other twice. The most recent encounter was in this same qualifying round, where Iceland won decisively 5-0, leaving Azerbaijan with no options. The first clash between the two sides dates back to 2008, in a friendly that ended in a 1-1 draw, the only point of balance in this short history.

Now, with Azerbaijan already out of contention, they will be looking to end their campaign with dignity and cause an upset against an Icelandic team that wants to keep dreaming of the World Cup.
