In 2023, the EU recorded 46 road fatalities per million inhabitants. Seven regions registered at least 100 fatalities per million inhabitants. These regions were mostly clustered in the south-east corner of the EU with Bulgaria, Greece and Romania particularly bad.

In contrast, northern Europe shows some of the lowest rates for road fatalities in the continent – with Latvia the most notable exception with 76 road fatalities per million inhabitants.
