Frances U17 team made it to the next round in the World Cup in Qatar after scraping a 2–0 win against Colombia, but things got out of hand when a full-on brawl broke out as soon as the final whistle went.

The routine match-winner celebration took a dark turn and has left the French Football Federation scrambling to file an official complaint with FIFA.

France took the lead in the first half thanks to Antoine Valero, and then in stoppage time Pierre Mounguengue scored the second to seal the win. Colombia pushed hard late, but their efforts came to nothing.

Taunting gone bad

So tensions were already built and a red card was shown to a Colombian player towards the end of the match. Then, according to multiple reports, things quickly escalated following some taunting of a Colombian player by a French opponent right at the final whistle. That’s when a huge fight erupted, according to the reports. The Colombians weren’t having it, and before you knew it, the provocation sparked an immediate reaction and a number of them were chasing the French taunter around the pitch.

Security staff tried to intervene, but instead of things calming down, the whole thing just escalated. More players got involved, staff, even some of the agents and family members who had come down from the stands to calm the situation, were all part of the melee.

Things got serious when a member of the French medical team got taken down while he was trying to help out on the ground. Some witnesses say he took a pretty bad knock to the head and eye. Two of the Colombian players, including team captain Cristian Orozco, got their marching orders (sent off) after that particular incident.

The French Football Federation has wasted no time in reporting the whole thing to FIFA claiming an assault had taken place, and they’re providing all sorts of evidence (especially video evidence and statements) from the players and staff to back up their complaint.

France will now be concentrating on their next match — an important knockout game against Brazil, but FIFA will be reviewing the complaint pretty soon and if some of the individuals involved and the penalties may be coming.
