Ukraine scrambles for energy as Russian attacks put power generation at ‘zero’ • FRANCE 24 English

As winter approaches, Ukraine and Russia are increasingly carrying out attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. Russian officials said Ukrainian strikes on the city of Belgar and the village of Corenevo have left some 20,000 people without power. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have left this country scrambling to turn the lights and the heating back on. Let’s speak to our correspondent now, Emanuel Shaz. Hello to you, uh, Emanuel. uh massive overnight Russian attacks as we’ve seen uh many days and weeks recently. Um how is it process of restoring the power in Ukraine going? Well, it was very complicated. It still is a challenge for uh all services involved. To give you an idea, I’m here in Kharkiv. This is the second biggest uh city of Ukraine, 1.3 million inhabitants. And following the strikes uh yesterday uh there was a day without electricity uh more than 24 hours without running water. Uh you can forget about the heat as well. Uh in fact the first uh public provider of energy said that all of his thermal plants had been hit had been either damaged or destroyed and of course it will take months to restore all that can be uh repaired. The foreign affairs minister Andre Cha also said that Russia in those tracks hit substations, power substations in the western part of the country that were uh that were uh providing uh uh enough uh power for nuclear power plants here in Ukraine uh to uh work. to give you an idea of just how difficult those tracks have rendered life here. The subway, you can see one of the subways of Hark just behind me is no longer running. Metros are no longer uh running. It still serves as a shelter because of course there’s the uh at all at all times we can have air red alerts and uh we have to then shelter from uh the possibility the threat of missiles or drones. Uh there’s also uh some of the public transport transport in the capital in KF which is no longer uh running as of today as repairs continue. There’s a power outages uh scheduled depending on uh uh each districts in order to facilitate the work of people uh repairing those infrastructure. yesterday for a few hours people couldn’t even get in and out of the border checkpoints because there was also a technical failure due to a lack of electricity so and public and also uh railway infrastructure was imp impacted with huge delays in trains. So, uh, it affects millions of people. Uh, millions of Ukrainians have to make do with either no to very little electricity, no heating, no water as, uh, temperatures are dropping here. And Emanuel, uh, Moscow saying that it’s a repelled Ukrainian attacks um, to break the encirclement of Prosk. What more can you tell us about the battle going on in that strategic Ukrainian city? Well, uh, according to, uh, Moscow, uh, indeed they have, uh, broken those attempts, but there’s a different sound when you, uh, take your information from Ukraine. It’s very much a war of information, and also it is a very moving uh, situation. There is intense fighting within Pocaros with uh, hundreds of Russian uh, soldiers infiltrated within the city. And this is why it is critical for the Ukrainian troops to maintain their lines of uh uh uh their lines of supplies open to the north of the city. So far, Kiev denies all encirclements, operations are ongoing. And if we want to understand why Ukrainians are fighting so hard to defend their city of Brosk, we’ve seen in Bahmut in Abdivka uh quite the same scenario being played and in the end Russia manages to capture the city and to illegally occupies it. Well, if Russians manage to get a hold of PCR, they will be able to uh you know to uh to to gather a huge amount of troops within an urban environment and that would facilitate uh their attacks toward the neighboring uh neighboring uh region of Neopetros. And that is why Ukrainians are uh are intent on defending Proskuh at the moment because that would give an advantage for Russia to launch further attacks later on. All right, Emanuel. Ukraine faced power cuts of up to 16 hours across most regions on Sunday operators said, as the country scrambles to make repairs after massive Russian attacks targeted its energy infrastructure. The national energy provider said the attacks had put its generating capacity down to “zero”, adding to the risk of heating outages in the coming months.   36. The lack of logic in the Ukrainian justification for sacrificing their army is sickening. Supposedly they are fighting for Pokrovsk to avoid having to fight for the next city. They have no hope of holding Pokrovsk so the fight for the next city is inevitable; they will just be fighting it with an army that has sacrificed it best troops and will be even less able to defend that city.

  41. If Ukraine strikes energy infrastructure, its military funding infrastructure, if Russia strikes, it is residential infrastructure. Same scenario but different standards for both.
