  1. Footage captured at an ex-RAF base housing hundreds of asylum seekers shows giant rats, leaking toilets and flooded hallways.

Video and photos reveal squalid conditions at [MDP Wethersfield in Essex](https://inews.co.uk/news/raf-housing-asylum-seekers-untrained-temp-staff-4033852?srsltid=AfmBOopc08pijoDvAsMYbNDiyJl3HFRCxGK3eQ3VtRTAkuBnJy3TjBMN&ico=in-line_link), which accommodates up to 1,245 male migrants who arrived in the UK on small boats.

Weathersfield is the main military base the Government uses to house small boat migrants.

The footage shows rats crawling under portacabins[,](https://inews.co.uk/news/faeces-floors-tb-risk-home-office-asylum-site-4006451?srsltid=AfmBOoqrvViTEixXyQ6pbwGj_qZjV0KZSdVlARcqNXUzzirfTeJSvGEx&ico=in-line_link) with overflowing urinals leaking onto toilet floors at the former Ministry of Defence site.

Toilets are blocked up and ripped from the walls, a broken washing machine is seen pouring water onto the floor while mounds of rubbish are seen in bedrooms and storerooms.

Empty beer cans and bottles are seen [in piles](https://inews.co.uk/news/children-housed-adult-migrant-site-raf-wethersfield-3586598?srsltid=AfmBOoqqaZR5cPYloxDG1PY8L-I4YFGssqQoRm7E0GnmmHaAfTKbLpA_&ico=in-line_link) at the facility despite the Government insisting Wethersfield, which is run by Clearsprings Ready Homes on behalf of the Home Office, is a strict “no alcohol zone” where they state “we’ll continue to ensure that the no alcohol rule is enforced”.

It comes after a new report found [asylum seekers](https://inews.co.uk/topic/asylum-seekers?ico=in-line_link) are stuck in [overcrowded conditions](https://inews.co.uk/news/asylum-seeker-hotel-how-i-lived-9-week-3889613?srsltid=AfmBOoroY5cX81w9Az5CpTqDK4jh-md4q53S9VWGVQwMwSNdLYZOt6wl&ico=in-line_link) with rodent outbreaks inside some [hotels in the South of England](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/asylum-hotels-still-costing-uk-billions-why-4003634?ico=in-line_link).

A security guard who has worked at Wethersfield said there were “rats as big as cats” with the problem at the site getting worse after capacity at the base was increased to 1,240 earlier this year.

  2. A lot of that sounds like the fault of the residents. Maybe they’re just adapting the conditions to what they’re used to back home?

  3. Blocked toilets, toilets ripped from the walls, empty beer cans.

Sounds like these conditions were self inflicted

  4. This is luxury compared to a tent in a field in France in winter tbh. When I was homeless I had a cardboard box and I hugged the cat rats to stay warm in winter.

  5. But yeah, they all get cars and tvs and hundreds in benefits… /s

  6. Even the biggest rats can’t rip a toilet off the wall, or open and throw away a beer can. Seems obvious who’s responsible for most of the damage.

  7. That toilet in the OP article hasn’t just fallen off the mounting/wall on its own.

Anyone in the UK illegally should be fingerprinted, iris-scanned, and DNA-tested, then placed in one of two tented camps segregated—one for each gender. Children would be placed with the women. This area would be fenced off and guarded by the army. All food and healthcare, etc., would be provided by the UNHCR while the UNHCR arranges the person’s repatriation.

  8. If only they had over 1,000 young men to keep the toilets fixed and catch the rats 😉

  9. The disgusting comments here do not surprise me in the least. It seems we have learned nothing of the consequences of dehumanising people. Companies are getting rich off the crisis and delays in the asylum system, nobody asks where the billions spent are actually going, the conditions are appalling and yet people persist in this idea that people choose to risk their lives fleeing for no good reason, and celebrate their suffering.

This country is indeed going to shit, and it has nothing to do with asylum seekers. If it’s not them it’s disabled adults or even disabled kids being blamed for the financial collapse of our country while private companies rake in billions in taxpayer money for this kind of “service” but nobody seems to have a problem with this.

Do you think that these people are suffering because this company can’t afford to provide working toilets and hire exterminators? Or do you think they are taking as much taxpayer money as possible and then doing the bare minimum, knowing that people won’t give a shit?

  10. Rats are that size, and so are cats, if they were the size of lions?

  11. People really need to wake up and start treating these migrants as human beings and hold them accountable.

Instead of making it out like, we are putting them in these horrible places.

Its not they are creating most of the problems themselves. They are bringing what they know from where ever they come from and just create it themselves.

Same story at our migrant hotel and surrounding area. It was a pretty clean place once but now its litter everywhere, stories even coming from the mp saying how bad their living conditions are.

Its just the way they live and instead of holding them accountable, its some how our fault.

Never a mention of the poor people living on the streets always o well give to charity and dk charity work.

No how about we send all of the migrants who came on a boat, lorry or out stayed their visa back to where ever they came from.

Put our homeless in there, give them support and therapy and help to try and get them off the streets.

Will it help all homeless? No of course not some are just to far gone and have just lost hope at this point.

Still absolutely baffles me that the government and many people defend helping these type of migrants and yet homeless problem, let’s just leave that to charity work.

We are bending over backwards for others and do nothing for our own.

  12. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps the leaking toilets while definitely needing to be repaired weren’t leaking before the camp was used to house people that have come over on small boats.

  13. And people thought Rwanda was meant to be a deterrent.

  14. This isn’t unusual for serving military to experience nor tenants across the UK in some places. Birmingham bins strikes had rats as big as horses so this must be luxuary.

What was expected? It’s hardly like we all dump in gold plated toilets and wipe with virgin silk bog roll. We only have to go back a few generations where having a loo outside the house was a reality for most.

Everybody should have basic sanitation and a clean environment regardless of status/ position.

Sadly the UK isn’t exactly known for retaining investment in infrastructure for decades now and its not going to be a quick change on that front either as our magic money tree is definitely dead, its roots were poisoned by short-term thinking and the leaves were sold off years ago to the political class’s chums for peanuts.

  15. Import the third world and become the third world. Sounds like this base is just a microcosm of what is happening outside its walls. Hopefully all the doctors and engineers living inside will fix the issues without more resources from the taxpayer. Or not.

  16. > Rats as ‘big as cats’

Proceeds to show a picture of a normal rat. Lol

Also if that toilet was properly installed in the first place, that’s been intentionally broken from it’s fixings.

  17. It’s strange. If I lived somewhere with Rats then I would probably tidy up the rubbish. Rats don’t just appear for fun, there’s a food source.

  18. If they don’t like it they can go back to where they came from.

  19. Sounds like a standard military base then.

Still better than living in a tent in Calais.

I was homeless for a while, the council told me there was no help for a young white male, literally might as well have said, get fucked.

When I did get help it was through a charity and it was horrible, obviously I’m still grateful.

  20. The racism in the comments here is disgusting. You can be completely anti immigration and still see asylum seekers as human beings

  21. The rats are as big as cats AND they’re leaking sewage?

  22. If you destroy your accommodation you should be deported
